HYDRA is a terrorist-criminal-paramilitary organization bent on world domination. It was founded shortly after the rise of Nazism in Germany by Johann Schmidt as the scientific branch of the Nazi Schutzstaffel.
Its main purpose was to create advanced weaponry for the German armies, but over the years, members of HYDRA became loyal only to Schmidt himself. At the beginning of World War II, HYDRA still fought for the Nazi cause, but in 1943, Schmidt separated HYDRA from Nazi Germany to start his own conquest of the world.
After its defeat at the hands of Captain America in 1945 and the subsequent disappearance of Johann Schmidt, HYDRA was secretly rebuilt inside S.H.I.E.L.D. by Schmidt's top scientist Arnim Zola, who was recruited into the agency during Operation Paperclip. Though Zola's body died in the early 1970s, HYDRA was already well established, and Zola's mind continued to live in a computer. In the following decades, HYDRA secretly fed crises around the world, aiming to create a society that would accept the fascist New World Order just to gain its security.
By the beginning of the 21st century, operatives of HYDRA managed to spread outside of S.H.I.E.L.D., infiltrating many important organizations, including the United States Government and the World Security Council, eventually establishing many secret bases around the world. One of HYDRA's top agents in S.H.I.E.L.D., John Garrett, secretly led the Centipede Project with the goal to recreate the Super Soldier. In 2014, HYDRA's plans for world domination almost succeeded through their agent Alexander Pierce and S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Project Insight. However, their plan to eliminate 20 million people who posed a threat to HYDRA failed because of the efforts of HYDRA's oldest enemy, Captain America, who publicly exposed their infiltration of S.H.I.E.L.D. and destroyed their main tool of destruction, three of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s Helicarriers. However, HYDRA's leader Wolfgang von Strucker already had new plans for global domination, plans which included twins declared "miracles" and the Scepter.
With its existence publicly known, HYDRA started a war against the remnants of S.H.I.E.L.D., taking over many S.H.I.E.L.D. bases. For many months, HYDRA's forces led by John Garrett fought a vicious fight against the small team of loyal S.H.I.E.L.D. agents led by Phil Coulson. Despite its attempt to infiltrate the U.S. Armed Forces through Ian Quinn and the Deathlok Soldiers, Garrett's group was ultimately defeated through the combined efforts of S.H.I.E.L.D.'s former director Nick Fury, Coulson's team, and the U.S. Marines.
However, even that defeat was only a temporary setback for HYDRA. S.H.I.E.L.D. was destroyed and publicly declared a terrorist organization, and many HYDRA agents continued with their work, including the high ranking member Daniel Whitehall who used the fall of S.H.I.E.L.D. to start the campaign to recover the mysterious Obelisk (also see Diviner.). However, the campaign ended disastrously for HYDRA. Whitehall was killed before he could fully exploit the Obelisk, his second in command Sunil Bakshi was captured, and many other heads of HYDRA were killed by HYDRA itself when S.H.I.E.L.D. fooled them into thinking that there was a power struggle within HYDRA's ranks. The only remaining heads of HYDRA, Baron von Strucker (also see Wolfgang von Strucker)and Doctor List, continued with their experiments on powered individuals. However, even their experiments came to an end when the Avengers attacked and captured Strucker's fortress in Sokovia. Despite the deaths of the leaders and destruction of most of the bases, Grant Ward decided to rebuild HYDRA and become its new head, with some of the remaining operatives pledging their loyalty to him.

Johann Schmidt is the founder and commanding officer of HYDRA, a special weapons division of the Nazi Schutzstaffel. A brilliant scientist in his own right, he fought his way through the ranks of Nazi elite to become a confidant of Adolf Hitler himself. However, his ambition to become the superior man led him to test the Super Soldier Serum on himself which transformed him into the horrifying Red Skull. After gaining possession of the mystical Tesseract and its unimaginable power, he decided to turn his back on the Third Reich and rule the world alone. However, as World War II raged, his plans would be challenged by the only Allied super soldier, Captain America.
Gideon Malick is one of the heads of HYDRA. Originally one of HYDRA's infiltrators in the World Security Council, he broke ties with that organization after it became defunct. Six months after the fall of Wolfgang von Strucker's HYDRA cell, Malick was contacted by Strucker's son Werner, who was recently recruited to work for Grant Ward's HYDRA cell.
Grant Douglas Ward is one of the leaders of HYDRA. A former HYDRA infiltrator in S.H.I.E.L.D. disguised as a Level 7 operative, he was abused as a child by his family. As a teenager, he tried to burn down his family home. Ward was imprisoned until he was freed by John Garrett, who trained Ward to become a cold-blooded killer. Ward eventually became more loyal to him than to HYDRA. As an agent of S.H.I.E.L.D., he was recruited onto Coulson's Team, working with them on all their missions, pretending to be gruff and anti-social and to become emotionally attached to the team.
During the HYDRA Uprising, he killed Victoria Hand but still maintained his cover as a loyal S.H.I.E.L.D. agent. He broke cover on John Garrett's orders and rejoined HYDRA. Despite harboring feelings for Skye, he followed all of Garrett's orders. When Garrett's HYDRA cell lost the Battle at Cybertek, he was imprisoned by Coulson.
Ward managed to escape many months later and rejoined HYDRA under Daniel Whitehall. However, he left the organization again after Whitehall's death along with Kara Palamas. They started a path in order to close their wounds and move forward that culminated in kidnapping Bobbi Morse, whom they considered responsible Palamas' brainwashing. Ward ended up accidentally killing Palamas, and he rejoined the remnants of HYDRA, deciding to rebuild the organization and become its new leader.Visit Grant Ward's Bio
The Monolith was one of many products produced by the Kree during the creation of the Inhumans on prehistoric Earth. The ruling Kree hierarchy, deeming the creation of the Inhumans by a rogue Kree faction as being a mistake, conceived the Monolith as a means of wiping them out. Aside from destroying the Inhumans, the Monolith also had the ability to absorb and then transport individuals across space.
An Inhuman of immense power was born and desired to rule the Earth. He was banished by others through the Monolith.
In 1839 at Gloucestershire, England, a group of noblemen came into possession of the Monolith. They used it to send various people to the other side of the portal, but none of them ever came back.
The Monolith was later found on an excavation site during the late 1800s or early 1900s. In 2001, the Monolith was in the possession of NASA which sent a four man expedition into its portal to survey the planet on the other side. Will Daniels went with three scientists; it was his job to protect them from danger until they could be retrieved. When they didn't return, the Monolith was given to S.H.I.E.L.D. and was stored in the cargo hold of the aircraft carrier Iliad.
Director Nick Fury ordered Bobbi Morse to destroy the Iliad to assure that the Monolith would not fall to HYDRA during the HYDRA Uprising. Morse ultimately defied her orders, saving the ship, and continuing the existence of the Stone.
War against the Inhumans
When Phil Coulson became Director of S.H.I.E.L.D., he learned of the Monolith from the Toolbox. It revealed that HYDRA sought the item and that it was in Robert Gonzales' possession.
Raina had a precognitive dream about the Monolith, and this information was passed on to Afterlife leader Jiaying, who allowed Raina and Gordon to infiltrate the vessel to verify its location. When the two were discovered by Lance Hunter, Raina and Gordon escaped and the Monolith was given an armed regiment to defend it.
During the Inhuman War against S.H.I.E.L.D., the first place that the Inhumans attacked on the Iliad was the room that housed the Monolith. After taking control of the room, and later the ship, Gordon and Lincoln Campbell observed the Monolith; Gordon assured Campbell that it would not be used against them with the ship now conquered.
After the Iliad was retaken by S.H.I.E.L.D., the Monolith was moved to the Playground. Jemma Simmons tried requesting permission from Alphonso Mackenzie, who had been put in charge of all extraterrestrial artifacts, to send a probe into the box to examine the Monolith but Mackenzie declared that they will never open the box.
While Leo Fitz awkwardly tried to ask Simmons out to dinner, he stumbled, causing the lock on the case to loosen. Simmons then found out that the case was unlocked; when trying to re-lock the case, the stone morphed into its liquid form, shooting out and swallowing her. It transported her to another world, then went back to its original form.
The Monolith was deemed off-limits and locked away after the disappearance of Jemma Simmons was discovered. Lincoln Campbell was asked about its capabilities; all he knew was that it was dangerous.
Frustrated after months of research, Leo Fitz took a shotgun and blasted the lock off the container of the Monolith. He then beat on it, begging it to "do something"; it remained solid and dormant.
Used One Last Time
Just as the other agents pulled Leo Fitz away from the Monolith, it transformed to its liquid state. When it returned to solid, it had left sand on Fitz's face and the floor.
Alphonso Mackenzie loaded the Monolith into the Zephyr One and delivered it to a castle in England. There the rock was placed in a containment unit that forced it to open a portal. While the portal was open, Fitz fired a flare to Monolith Planet. Suddenly the machines fell apart and the stone returned to its solid state.
Later, Daisy Johnson used her vibrational powers to open the portal. Fitz entered, tied to a tether. The machinery of the tether began to collapse; Bobbi Morse and Mackenzie tried to sustain it while Johnson was straining to hold the portal open. The rock could no longer maintain its integrity and disintegrated; Fitz and Jemma Simmons were back on Earth.
Fragments of the Monolith were brought back to the Playground; Simmons saw the pieces as she took a tour of her laboratory. Sometime later, Simmons returned to the lab and inspected the fragments. Morse entered and assured Simmons that the pieces were now inert.
One of the fragments of the Monolith was kept in a vault belonging to Wolfgang von Strucker; Gideon Malick procured the vault after Strucker's death. While Malick visiting the vault, Grant Ward entered; Malick showed Ward the contained fragment and asked him to watch as it transformed between its solid and liquid states, as he told Ward the story of It, his banishment to Monolith Planet, and the true origin and purpose of HYDRA.Visit the information regarding the Monolith

The Strategic Homeland Intervention, Enforcement and Logistics Division, better known by its acronym S.H.I.E.L.D., was organized to protect the United States, and later the entire world, from all possible threats. With its advanced weapons and extraordinary agents, S.H.I.E.L.D. was maybe the greatest military power on Earth. Run by Nick Fury and the World Security Council in the modern age, S.H.I.E.L.D. had to deal with all kinds of superhumans, demigods, and extraterrestrial. The agency became publicly known after the Battle of New York, partially because of the Rising Tide website.Close Panel

Maveth (Hebrew: מוות) is a planet light years from Earth. The planet was home to an advanced civilization until an exiled Inhuman from Earth, known only as It to many people and referred to as Death by Gideon Malick, ended up destroying them. In the 21st Century, the planet was the home of Will Daniels from 2001 to 2015 and temporarily housed Jemma Simmons for approximately six months....
It is a parasitic Inhuman capable of infesting and possessing the bodies of the dead. Because of its great powers, It was banished to a barren planet. It's worshipers founded a society with the sole purpose of bringing It back to Earth to conquer it. Over the centuries, that society evolved into HYDRA....
Though Grant Ward was effectively killed on Maveth, it would not be the end of him. The Will Daniels that was attacking Fitz during Ward's bout with Coulson was actually the dark Inhuman possessing the astronaut's corpse.
